Visitor Sign-In Stations - Exploring Options for Visitor Self-Registration
STOPware is finding that kiosk solutions are a growing trend with visitor management. Solutions range from an unmanned kiosk where visitors enter their own information, scan their IDs, and print their own badges, to various kiosk solutions where visitors just scan an ID and proceed to an attendant who completes the record and prints the badge.
Some variations on the kiosk theme are:
- Customized Lobby Kiosk Station
- Wall-Mount Style
- Desktop Visitor Sign-In Station
- ADA-Compliant Sign-In Station
Customized lobby kiosk station: The floor-standing unit includes touch screen and options of a driver license scanner, camera, barcode scanner, badge printer, and signature capture pad for NDA or safety agreements. This unit includes custom printed graphics on the Lexan front panel. The floor-standing kiosk can be used as an unattended station where there is no need for integration with an access control system, OR, with an attendant who could complete the visit by printing a temporary badge and activating an access control system prox card.
Wall Mount style: This kiosk can include many of the hardware items noted in floor-standing unit and is suitable for lobbies with limited floor space and a wall where unit can be mounted for visibility and accessibility.
Desktop visitor sign-in stations: A good solution for a desktop or countertop station is a StealthTouch all-in one computer and touch screen. The StealthTouch includes a camera and barcode scanner, with optional scanner for driver licenses with mag stripes. If the image of the business cards and driver licenses is needed for the visitor records, a ScanShell OCR scanner can be attached to the all-in-one. If there is no attendant at a station, the StealthTouch can also be used with a badge printer to complete the sign-in procedure.
ADA compliant sign-in station: This type must have the touch screen between 42 and 47 inches from the floor and is a special order.
All visitor sign-in stations discussed here require a PassagePoint client license. For more information contact: sales@stopware.com.

Lesson Learned - Always Consider Your Options
A new customer wanted us to install a table top kiosk at their front desk. We recommended that when using such a device that they should take the ADA (American Disabilities Act) into consideration. In order for someone with a disability to use the kiosk, the bottom of the touch screen needs to be between 42 and 47 inches from the finished elevation in order to be ADA-compliant.
This particular customer didn't want to spend the additional expense for the ADA-compliant sign-in station.
Picture #1 shows the kiosk at 53 inches from finished elevation. Unfortunately, shortly after installation, this customer determined that they did in fact need their visitor registration kiosk to be ADA-compliant so had to incur an additional expense to retro-fit their table-top kiosk to be wall mounted. Picture #2 shows the kiosk at the proper elevation to meet ADA regulations. The additional expense to retro-fit their table top kiosk ended up costing more than if they had originally gone with the ADA-compliant station.
We respect the privacy of our clients and therefore have not released our client's name in this article. If you have questions or would like more details about this installation, please contact sales@stopware.com.
